AL SMITH

1984 INDUCTEE

* Began his competitive race car driving career in 1956, where he finished
the season sitting 8th in total points for the year.

* His second year of competition say him finish the season in 9th position.

* He won his first Main Event on June 1st, 1958, then promptly followed up by
winning the next two. He won the Gold Cup, earned awards for the best looking
car and best looking crew and finished the year sitting in 4th place in points.

* 1959 saw Al win the July Cup, the Championship Race and end up 3rd overall in
the point championships.

* As well as being voted Most Popular Driver in 1960, Al won the Roy White Memorial
Race and was crowned the Season Points Champion.

* He returned to a 7th place final finish in the 1961 point championships.

* 1961 saw Al switch his driving talents from the Stock Cars to the Modified
Sportsman class.

* He competed on the very competitive Northwest Canadian-American Modified Racing
Association (C.A.M.R.A.) circuit in 1963. As well as being the track record
holder in Victoria, Al finished a credible 5th in the total point standings.

* In 1964, he again ran the C.A.M.R.A. circuit, finishing the year in 6th place.

* Al stayed closer to home in 1965, running the inter-city Modified circuit where
he again held the track record in Victoria and finished the year in 2nd spot.

* In 1966, Al won the Strawberry Cup race and was 7th in C.A.M.R.A. points.

* Al again followed the C.A.M.R.A. circuit in 1967, ending the year in 3rd place.

* After a brief retirement, Al returned to run Modifieds again. He was 6th in
C.A.M.R.A. points and also competed with the Washington Racing Association (W.R.A.)
