* He began his involvement in the sport of
Auto Racing as a crew member on a 1951 Dodge Coupe stock car in 1964.
The car was driven for four years by Fred Best and was crewed by Denny
Rand, Lawrence Fox and Ken Holding. As the car was owned by the Checkmates
Car Club, he even tried out as the part time driver of the car.
* In 1966, he gave up the pit activities and went to work for Reg Midgley
in the promotional side of the sport. He assisted with the programme
and did various duties around the racetrack.
* Commencing in 1967, his duties expanded substantially as he learned
most of the tasks associated with the management and administration
side of the sport. He was involved with programme sales, he worked in
the concessions, did media reports on radio and newspaper and also handled
some of the promotional tasks.
* He did the job of track recorder for two years and compiled statistics
for all the classes of cars and drivers. He was also the track announcer
on occasion, a duty he again assumed in the mid 80's with Butch
Behn.
* The logistics of organizing out of town shows into Victoria,
obtaining newspaper, radio and T.V. coverages, arranging room bookings
and managing special events with the various race teams all came under
his direction.
* He became the assistant track manager in 1971. He was also on the
Executive of the Western Auto Racing Promoter's Association, a position
he held for over ten years. When the International Driver's Challenge
(IDC) Race Series was organized, he worked on the statistics for both
series (Super Stocks and Modified/Sprint Cars). He remained in this
position for the duration of the series.
* As a fourteen year member of the Vancouver Island Track Racing Association
(VITRA), he produced a Special Souvenir Programme for the club's 22nd
Awards Banquet in 1972. The following year, he was the editor of the
VITRA and Western Speedway 1973 Yearbook titled "Oval trakin' with
V.I.T.R.A."
* He acted as Track Manager and Announcer at Western Speedway from 1981
to 1983.
