DAVE COOPER

-1984 INDUCTEE

* Dave, a local Victorian, was introduced to the sport of Auto Racing by
Eric Foster, former owner of a Fernwood Avenue garage.

* He drove his first race in 1941 at the Langford Speedway. He started
driving "street stocks" such as a 1936 Chrysler and later turned to
the stripped down Sprint Cars.

* As a plumber by trade, Dave got involved with the building of Western
Speedway in 1953 by volunteering to do all the plumbing work.

* In 1953, he was first in season points for both the Stock Car class and
also the Big Car (Sprint) class.

* He was again points champion for Stock Cars in 1954 as well as holding the
track record and being voted as Popular Driver.

* As the winner of the Gold Cup Race in 1955, the "Flying Plumber" also repeated
as track champion.

* In 1957, Dave was virtually unbeatable. On his way to becoming the track
champion for the third time, he won the Gold Cup, the Roy White Memorial, the
Six-Mile Perpetual Trophy, the Corby Cup (most Main Event wins) and the
Championship Race.

* 1958 was almost a carbon copy of the previous year as Dave repeated as track
champion, also winning the Corby Cup, the Roy White Memorial, the Championship
Race and was the track record holder.

* Dave won the Dick Willoughby Memorial Trophy in 1959 and finished the year in
5th place in the point standings.

* After a brief retirement, Dave moved into Super Stock racing and travelled
throughout the Northwest on a limited basis.

* He retired from active competition in 1974.
