GRANT KING

1994 INDUCTEE

* First involvement in the sport of Auto Racing was at Langford Speedway in the late 1940's. He built his own sprint car and had Bung Eng as his driver.

* Worked with driver Bob Simpson in the late 40's and early 50's and won many races with him. He even campaigned a stock car at Shearing's Speedway in 1950.

* Campaigned stock cars at Western Speedway in the 1950's and teamed with driver Dick Varley from 1959 to 1961. This duo won many races with the powerful GMC engine in the Kersey Peanut Butter Special.

* Began designing and building his own "Kingo" Go-Karts in 1961 and was still working with Bob Simpson and the sprint car.

* 1963 saw Grant construct 5 new super modified race cars at Geoff Vantreight's small shop. These cars had quite illustrious careers throughout the Northwest. The #7 Daffodil Special was campaigned for many years in Victoria by Al and Roy Smith.

* Grant went to Portland, Oregon in 1964 to work with Rolla Vollstedt who was building an Indy car for Len Sutton to campaign. He learned his trade and became quite familiar with the Offenhauser power plant, then went to Indy with the team.

* Grant made the move to Indianapolis in the mid-sixties, where he set up his shop and became a race car mechanic for the likes of Vollstedt, Jim Robbins, A. J. Watson and
Andy Granatelli.

* He then formed his own company, Grant King Racers Inc., and built cars for many of the notable race drivers of the day. He built sprint cars, midgets, Indy cars and even a road racing vehicle. It is estimated that Grant produced over 250 complete
cars, no "kits". King-built cars have won championships with IMCA, USAC and countless outlaw circuits.

* Grant was co-promoter of the 1970 "Pole Day Sprint" show at Indianapolis Raceway Park, which he continued for many years. Sprint and champ dirt cars have been Grant's passion, as he now restores cars he originally built. He still works out
of the same shop in Indianapolis where he began his professional career.
