Larry Pollard

2003 Inductee

*Began crewing with his father in Alberta and continued in 1966 after moving to Victoria.
*Built his first stock car in 1967 at the age of 13, but other than some exhibition drives, had to wait until 1970 to compete.
*In his first race meet at Western Speedway, won his heat and was second in the Main Event. Ended the year as the highest finishing rookie.

*1971 - Won the Championship Race and Stock Car points title.
*1972 - Moved up to Super Stocks and was the highest finishing rookie (5th in points). He also won five out of fifteen Trophy Dashes.
*1973 - Fourth in local Super Stock points, then moved to the Open Competition class in 1974.
*1975 - Won two of the five Carling Series races plus the Billy Foster Memorial race.
*1976 - Again won the Billy Foster Memorial as well as three Main Events in a row.
*1978 - Was voted the VITRA Driver of the Year.
*1979 - Promoted and ran the "Outlaw" Open Super Stock class where he won 3 Main Events and also scored a clean sweep at Langley Speedway. He was also President of The Capital City Auto Racing group.
*1980 - Held the track record at Western and was 2nd in the Canada 200 race in 1981.
*He gained NASCAR attention while crewing on Roy Smith's winning Winston West operation for two years and competing at the Daytona 500 race.
*Joined the Richard Childress operation as a crew member for Ricky Rudd in 1982.
*Moved to the Richard Petty organization and was co-crew chief for Richard's three victories in 1983.
*Became crew chief for Phil Parsons in 1984. Phil finished second to Rusty Wallace in NASCAR rookie points.
*Drove Grand National cars in 1985 and 1986, finishing third and ninth in points.
*1987 - Became the first foreign-born driver to win a NASCAR Busch GN race (Hampton, Virginia). Also competed in four Winston Cup events.
*Was seriously injured in a 1988 crash. He then raced on a very limited basis in subsequent years.
*1989 - Worked as a colour commentator for Capital Sports Network covering Busch G.N. race events.
*His business, (L.P. Gear, opened in 1987), sells gears and services racing components to the various NASCAR racing series' as well as other related racing groups.
