PHIL HENDRY

1989 INDUCTEE

* Phil started his racing activities by becoming a member of the Vancouver Island Track Racing Association (V.I.T.R.A.) in 1952.

* He served as the official starter at Victoria's Western Speedway from 1956 to 1972.

* Phil always displayed a certain class to the position, which earned him the respect of the drivers he was flagging.

* His flambouyant style of flagging always added greatly to the show.

* He passed on some of his talented moves and expertise to the young starters who apprenticed under him and subsequently took over when he retired.

* Phil was also known to be involved in many club activities. He was a fixture in the Victoria May Day parades, was involved in "fun" activities at the track,was known to take the wheel in special events such as demolition derbies, and
was renowned as the king of the Western Speedway fireworks displays.

* In 1962, Phil took an V.I.T.R.A. Executive position as Treasurer.

* In 1964, he became club Secretary for V.I.T.R.A.

* 1965 saw Phil become Vice-President of the club.

* He then served as a club Director from 1966 to 1968.

* Phil again took the post of V.I.T.R.A. Vice-President in 1971.

* He was honoured with a life membership to V.I.T.R.A. in 1975.
