* Phil started his racing activities by becoming a member of the Vancouver Island Track Racing Association (V.I.T.R.A.) in 1952. * He served as the official starter at Victoria's Western Speedway from 1956 to 1972. * Phil always displayed a certain class to the position, which earned him the respect of the drivers he was flagging. * His flambouyant style of flagging always added greatly to the show. * He passed on some of his talented moves and expertise to the young starters who apprenticed under him and subsequently took over when he retired. * Phil was also known to be involved in many
club activities. He was a fixture in the Victoria May Day parades, was
involved in "fun" activities at the track,was known to take
the wheel in special events such as demolition derbies, and * In 1962, Phil took an V.I.T.R.A. Executive position as Treasurer. * In 1964, he became club Secretary for V.I.T.R.A. * 1965 saw Phil become Vice-President of the club. * He then served as a club Director from 1966 to 1968. * Phil again took the post of V.I.T.R.A. Vice-President in 1971. * He was honoured with a life membership to V.I.T.R.A. in 1975. |
